Series 7 License Guide: General Securities Representative

The benchmark qualification for entering the securities industry. This guide covers the co-requisite requirements, examination structure, and sponsorship mandates.

The Series 7, administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), is the defining license for stockbrokers. It authorizes the holder to sell a broad spectrum of securities, including stocks, bonds, options, and mutual funds.

The Structural Shift: SIE + Series 7 Top-Off

Since October 2018, the path to obtaining a Series 7 has been divided into two distinct exams. Understanding this sequence is critical for pacing your study schedule.

Exam Composition and Difficulty

The Series 7 is notoriously rigorous, testing not just memorization, but application of suitability rules and complex option strategies.

Metric Specification
Total Questions 125 scored (plus 10 unscored pretest questions)
Time Allotted 3 hours and 45 minutes
Passing Score 72%
Exam Cost $300 (Typically paid by sponsoring firm)

Major Content Areas (Job Functions)

The exam is broken down into four core job functions of a registered rep. The weighting is heavily skewed toward practical application (Function 3).

  1. Function 1 (7%): Seeks Business for the Broker-Dealer from Customers and Potential Customers.
  2. Function 2 (9%): Opens Accounts After Obtaining and Evaluating Customers' Financial Profile and Investment Objectives.
  3. Function 3 (73%): Provides Customers with Information About Investments, Makes Suitable Recommendations, Transfers Assets and Maintains Appropriate Records.
  4. Function 4 (11%): Obtains and Verifies Customers' Purchase and Sales Instructions and Agreements; Processes, Completes, and Confirms Transactions.

The Sponsorship Requirement (Form U4)

You cannot simply register for the Series 7 online. A FINRA-member firm or Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO) must sponsor you. The firm accomplishes this by filing a Form U4 (Uniform Application for Securities Industry Registration or Transfer) on your behalf via the Central Registration Depository (CRD) system.

Background Investigation Warning

The U4 filing triggers a comprehensive background check, including fingerprinting. Certain financial events (bankruptcies, unsatisfied liens) and specific criminal convictions (statutory disqualification) will prevent licensure. Disclosure is paramount; omitting a reportable event is often viewed more harshly than the event itself.

Next Steps & Study Planning

Historically, candidates devote between 80 to 120 hours of focused study time to the Series 7 Top-Off exam. Use our Study Hours Planner to build a realistic schedule based on your professional background.
